Kannur Squad: The Unsung Heroes of Policing

I never miss a Mammootty movie, so I watched 'Kannur Squad' yesterday and liked it. The movie immediately reminded me of Karthi’s 'Theeran.' In both films, hardworking police officers move to various locales to trace criminals and endure hardships. While 'Theeran' was inspired by Operation Bawaria led by S.R. Jangid, 'Kannur Squad' draws inspiration from the real Kannur Squad led by Baby George. Both stories are compelling because they show the hardships of policemen who lack even basic accommodation while on the hunt. I particularly liked the ending dialogue, which emphasizes that commanders, not ministers or kings, lead wars.
'Kannur Squad' definitely stands out in the police procedural genre, being closer to reality like 'Theeran.' I appreciate that these movies ground the narrative instead of glamorizing the all-powerful police inspector often seen in mass movies. Like all Mammootty movies, it remains simple.
Plot: The movie is based on the murder of businessman Abdul Salam Hajee on August 4, 2013. The police team, led by Baby George, traveled for 16 days and covered 6,000 kms to nab the culprits. The storyline follows the pursuit of criminals Ameer Shah and Zulfiqar Ali, implicated in the murder and robbery of businessman Abdul Wahab. Set across various locations, the narrative unfolds through modern investigative techniques like mobile tower dump analysis. Despite early revelations of suspects, the film maintains suspense through the challenges faced by the police team.
Mammootty's team in the movie, with their real-life tribulations, adds emotional depth. Their performances collectively bring the story of the Kannur Squad to life. Despite the plethora of movies about police inspectors, 'Theeran' and 'Kannur Squad' stand out and keep one captivated until the end
