Rising Research Power: Telugu States Scientists in the Stanford–Elsevier Global Top 2% (2025

The Stanford–Elsevier Global Top 2% Scientists list (2025) has once again put India on the global research map. This year, 3,372 Indian scientists feature in the list. Out of these, the Telugu States — Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — contribute 153 scientists.

At first glance, this is a proud achievement. But when we look closer, the story gets even more compelling.

enlightened Key Highlights:

  • 12 AI & Image Processing Scientists from Telugu States feature among India’s 231 — an early sign that our region is carving a specialization in the world’s most important discipline.

  • Hyderabad dominates with 104 scientists (68%), cementing its role as the region’s epicenter of research.

  • University of Hyderabad (26) and IIT Hyderabad (16) together contribute nearly one-third of the total visibility.

  • Healthcare research stands tall: L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (10) shows that world-class applied science thrives in Hyderabad.

  • Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (9) and ARCI (5) highlight the city’s strength in national defense and advanced materials.

  • Private universities are entering the map: KL (6), GITAM (3), SRM-AP (2), and even colleges like CBIT, Vardhaman, and Mahindra University (1 each).

  • Andhra Pradesh contributes 39 scientists, with Sri Venkateswara University, Andhra University, Nagarjuna University, and GITAM leading the way.

enlightenedWhat the Report Contains

The Insights Report goes beyond numbers. It provides:

  • The Top 10 contributing institutions in Telugu States — from University of Hyderabad and IIT Hyderabad to NIT Warangal, LVPEI, and KL University.

  • A breakdown of how Hyderabad alone accounts for 68% of the state’s research strength, while Andhra Pradesh shows a distributed but rising presence.

  • Comparative standing of our universities against peers across India (e.g., UoH vs. VIT, IITH vs. SRM).

  • A frank analysis of why no scientist from AP & Telangana is yet in the global Top 5,000, and what must change.

  • The role private engineering colleges must play as they account for nearly 90% of all seats — and why research visibility is the new placement guarantee.

§ Why This Matters

  • For students: Global rankings raise the chances of being mentored in cutting-edge fields like GenAI, Quantum, Robotics.

  • For institutions: Faculty presence in global lists becomes a powerful branding tool to attract talent, collaborations, and industry partners.

  • For the region: Hyderabad is already branding itself as the AI Capital of India — but without deeper global impact, we risk being visible but not influential.

enlightened The Road Ahead

By 2030, the Telugu States can grow from 153 to 1,000+ globally ranked scientists — but only if we:

  • Retrain faculty in GenAI, Quantum AI, Robotics, Autonomous Systems.

  • Make industry certifications mandatory for credibility.

  • Transform AI/ML departments from symbolic setups to research-driven centers.

  • Forge industry–academia partnerships with Hyderabad’s IT corridor and Financial District.

The choice is clear: remain service providers, or become AI powerhouses shaping India’s global future.
